The Epic Catskill Road Trip
A couple of weekends we decided to get out the city and drive up into the Catskill mountains, about two hours drive North of Manhattan. Armed with a bundle of guidebooks, we were hoping to catch the much-hyped New England Fall foliage before it dropped. We hired a car on Saturday morning when the place opened at 7am. As usual they gave us a much bigger car than we booked. A Ford Taurus! what a car......
Anyway, we drove up the highway which hugs the Hudson river valley and we were in the Catskills by about 10:30. First we went to Kaaterskill waterfall, which was a bit of a hike. It didn't help that we didn't strickly adhere to the recommended path, so it turned into a bit of a mountaineering effort at some points. It was well worth the climb though as you can see from the pictures...
We stayed overnight in Saugerties near where the Woodstock festival was held. On Sunday we went to Mohonk mountain house and lake, which is a grand country retreat built on a lake up in the mountains as a Victorian hunting lodge for the Manhattan elite. Now its a nobby hotel , but you can still walk around the mountain and lake. It very nice, the tree foliage was spectacular along with the views over the valley. There is miles and miles of hiking trails. We went boating on Mohonk lake also. I discovered Carrie is rubbish at rowing! We spent quite a while going round in circles and bouncing off the banks when she was driving!
Carrie took lots of pictures of trees.
Driving back into Manhattan on Sunday evening was entertaining! Chaos!
The New York Hallowe'en parade down in Greenwich village was the following Monday. It was so packed with people, most dressed up as one thing or another. Hence the picture of Yoda and Princess Leia, otherwise known as our friends Cathy and Sasha. Cathy works with Carrie at Mount Sinai and Sasha is Swiss.
Here are some pictures..
